Eastern Pennsylvania — Bucks County, Lehigh Valley, and the Northampton area — has unique solar conditions: stricter snow load requirements, different utility programs (PPL, PECO, Met-Ed), and a Pennsylvania-specific SREC market. Here's how to pick the right installer.
1. Licensing — the absolute minimum
Pennsylvania requires a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) license for any solar installer. Verify it before signing anything. Look up your installer's HIC number at the PA Attorney General's site.
(Azimuth's PA HIC: PA088456, NJ HIC: 13VH08969100.)
2. Local experience matters more than national brand
National companies (SunRun, Sunnova) operate everywhere but rarely have crews in Bucks County or the Lehigh Valley. Your install gets sub-contracted, and warranty service can take months. Look for installers who employ their own crews within driving distance.
3. PA SREC pricing reality check
PA SRECs trade at $35-45 each (vs $85+ in NJ). If a salesperson is quoting you $80+ PA SRECs, walk away — they're inflating the savings to close the deal.
4. Snow load and roof analysis
Eastern PA gets 30+ inches of snow most winters. Your installer must use UL 3741 listed mounting hardware rated for 30+ psf snow load. Ask them to show you the engineering letter for your specific roof.
5. Utility-specific knowledge
| Region | Utility | Net Metering Cap |
|---|---|---|
| Bucks County | PECO | 50 kW residential |
| Lehigh Valley | PPL | 50 kW residential |
| Northampton/Berks | Met-Ed (FirstEnergy) | 50 kW residential |
Each utility has different interconnection forms and timelines. An out-of-state installer often misses these and delays your project by months.
6. Red flags
- "Free solar" claims (it's never free — someone is paying somewhere)
- Door-to-door sales pressure
- Quotes given without measuring your roof
- Vague warranty language ("comprehensive coverage")
- Asking for a deposit before permits are pulled
